Thoughts on QB Battle
From what I have read, you are onto something. Connor Shaw will play some against Southern Miss. With that being said, I think it says more about Stephen Garcia than it does Connor Shaw. I think Shaw is probable the future. But in no SEC coaches dreams would he want to put a true freshman against those ravenous defenses unless he had no alternative. By that I mean either injuries or hes that much more talented than the guys around him. Garcia is talented. He is getting out played and it is his own fault.
Thats not to say he won't come out and perform this year. He may surprise. But I agree with you that Shaw is good enough, and more importantly, focused enough to push Garcia for that job all year long. Spurrier isn't blowing smoke this time. We will see what he knows Thursday.

Garcia VS Shaw

Let the QB battle begin! You can bet your ass there will be one.
Everyone knows that the backup QB is always the big man on campus. Everyone also knows that Spurrier uses his back up QB to push the starter to be better with threats of losing the starting job. This QB battle goes deeper than that my friend. More than anyone realizes yet.
You see, Connor Shaw has topped Garcia on nearly every single aspect of the QB position since spring camp. Examples: decision making by getting the ball to the right WR, accuracy, taken less sacks, faster/quicker on his feet scrambling and taking off for a run, ect. These things may very well push Shaw above Garcia on the depth chart come Thursday night against USM.
Sure, Shaw is a true frosh but he has been there since the spring. He grasped the playbook very quickly. His dad was his high school HC and he has been around football since he was in pampers. He is a very serious young man, mature way beyond his young age. The kid rarely cracks a smile during interviews. You can see focus in his eyes.
Should Spurrier go with the more experienced Garcia when he clearly hasn't been the best QB since Shaw stepped foot on campus? Should Shaw not start just because he has the true freshman label? That will be for Spurrier to decide, and Shaw is making Spurrier's decision easier every time Shaw takes a snap in practice.
Its hard to feel bad for Garcia. He has had ample opportunities to be the starter. He has the tools to be a damn good SEC QB. What he lacks is the kind of focus that Shaw brings to the table. It can't be proven but you get the sense that Garcia hasn't put in the extra work required of him to be a successful SEC QB. Shaw has, and more.
It almost seems like Spurrier is laughing inside during his post practice interviews. He's thinking "these guys think this is regular Old Ball Coach speak, but Shaw is the best guy. I will sit Garcia on his ass."
I guess the world will know on thursday night..
UNC Tutorgate Press Conference Notes..
This one may be serious:
Notes from press conference:
-This is potentially quite major and UNC might be losing a lot of players.
-The tutor did work as a nanny or tutor for head coach Butch Davis, tutoring or nannying his son.
-UNC learned of the infractions through joint interviews with the NCAA. That means they might be unable to claim they self reported.
-Carolina is a serious academic school and the honor code might require, independently of the NCAA, that the players be expelled.
-The investigation concerns the majority of the UNC starting defense and some offensive players.
-The investigation is still in the early stages. It is unlikely to wrap up soon and is unlikely that the players will play during the investigation.
-Heads will roll if necessary. The Carolina way will not be compromised.

Wednesday Quick Outs
Bobby Bowden is starting his book promotion with a bang. The recently retired FSU coach is telling anyone who will listen that he was forced to retire last year and that his relationship with the athletic director is essentially over. Several years ago Wetherell (AD) said Bowden had a "lifetime contract" and Bowden expected him to honor it. I hated to see old Bowden go, but it was probably time.
The drunk, naked, trespassing, blocking lineman from Oregon state has my vote for the funniest suspension of the year. It was one thing to be drunk, passed out somewhere you don't belong, but to get in the three point stance and charge the cops? That story is amazingly hilarious.
Preseason "camp" is over for a lot of teams. Time to start preparing for the opening game.
I am really worried about Clemson's depth at linebacker, with Scotty Cooper having to retire suddenly. Whats going on with this? Didn't Stanley Hunter have to retire suddenly as well?
I missed some of the radio story this morning, but Cobb Oxford apparently went to the Anderson Gamecock club meeting last night. None of this is certain, but he said he got from it that Stephen Garcia wasn't thought to be very bright and that SC had a chance to have one of their best defenses ever. I regretfully missed most of the story.
Wow, I just read one of the few free articles I can read on Gamecock Central. It was a blog about Weslye Saunders. What a selfish dude. Oh well, most of them are. Hes definitely a Massingill.

Decent Read..

Hey, if your team can't win it all you may as well pull for the team in your own conference that does.
Its sad that the tough conference schedule is used as a crutch for many of the middle/lower tier teams of the SEC. With that said it is also justified.
The teams of the conferences outside of the SEC are tired of hearing the SEC.. SEC.. SEC.. chant are tired of hearing it for one reason. They have no excuse for not going undefeated in their own conference and ultimately "winning it all."
When a team from a conference outside of the SEC does go undefeated they are crushed by the best team in the SEC in the bowl game. The article that Staples wrote could be summed up by the last sentence of it:
"Win. The. National. Championship."
And he may as well have said "Or shut the HELL up" after it..
You can't tell me you wouldn't like to see FSU, Miami, or VT win a national title for the ACC. That is what your conference needs to be relevant. Until then winning the ACC will be just what VT, BC, and GT has done. What have they done exactly?
Hey excuses at many times suck. And at other times they suck and are justified as well. In the case of all the SEC teams battling every week, they all get the justified stamp of approval (in the case of this blog, with a cowboy pointing a gun beside it!)..
Interesting....
Nice little article for SEC fans. I put the link in two places. I'm trying to figure out how to make it link instantly, but I'm dumb with computers.

Anticipation
Football season is less than two weeks away and I am anxious to see what progress teams have made. As always, I am interested in a lot of teams but I am going to post about the two teams I watch the closest.
Going into the North Texas game, I am curious to see how Clemson moves the ball. I for one would like to see drives. I know that inferior teams give up a ton of huge plays to the opponent, but I want to see if Clemson's offensive line can push through a weaker opponent. I also would like to see if any of the recievers step up and give KP a go-to guy. I am going to post on my opinion of Parker soon, so I will leave that for the next couple of days.
Defensively, I want to see if the linebacking corps is going to be a weakness. I just don't think they will be a strength this year. If they can play solid, Clemson's defensive line is dominant and the secondary is talented. Simply put, I want to see if this is a cohesive unit...potentially dominant as the season goes along.
The biggest question to answer for South Carolina, in my mind is how well they will play against a team they should handle easily. I have watched many games where they just couldn't pull away from a team like this until the very end. I have no doubt their defense is solid, and will give up minimal points. But can their offense finally gel and not only that, will they perform consistantly? I don't know what to make of this team and Thursday night will go a long way in my overall view.
I have opinions about both teams, but I am not going to give out season record predictions or first game scores until.....next Wednesday or Thursday maybe?
To be a true Clemson fan, I will not be upset if the Gamecocks lose. I respect their team and follow them pretty close, but I can't just simply pull for them.
More coming soon...

Every school has those videos..
They are made to get you ready for the season. They are made by fans that are excited and sometimes talented. The one I posted of my team is just one of the better ones I've seen from a quality stand point.
With that known, there is not one single youtube college football season "hype video" that relates to the hype that Willy Korn received before he hit the college football ranks. Micky Plyler said he was the best high school football player to ever play the game! LOL
So my video is very miniscule compared to the Willy Korn hype machine that once was.

Quarterbacks And Their Fragile Egos
Who would have thought my first blog subject would have been linked to a former Clemson quarterback? I guess the timing is right, because ESPN has just posted their quarterback preview and analysis this past Friday. I'm not prepared to give an opinion on their analysis this soon, but I will continue with the subject of my blog.
Willie Korn was overhyped coming out of high school. It wasn't just the orange bleeding football super fans who bought in, but a lot of national media recruiting analysts as well (ESPN, Rivals, etc.). He did show some great athletic ability early on, but that shoulder injury was a permanent blow to his career. I think that his psyche never recovered, not to mention his arm. There is a fine line that separates good or bad quarterbacks in college football. Unlike the NFL, college quarterbacks don't have to fit a certain mold. I think its all about leadership and poise in pressure-filled situations. I don't think there was a tremendous amount of talent difference between Korn and Kyle Parker. I think Parker had confidence, and a winning mentality. He is the gunslinging type that isn't afraid to take risks on his throws. I just feel like Korn never gain comfortability at his position at the college level.
I am truly stunned at the news coming out of Marshall this week. I never thought he had lost enough to change positions as a weeker school with players nowhere near the rating he once had. Sure, a lot of Clemson fans out there, including me, bought into the hype and felt like he was the next great quarterback. It just didn't turn out that way. Everyone likes optimism, and every fan of every team of every season has goals and dreams in their head that are probably loftier than they should be. Deep down we all know its probably going to end up just a little different, but that is the great thing about college football. A perfect example is the video posted on this blog. It is optimism at its finest. South Carolina has not really had any concrete evidence of them finally bursting out of mediocrity this year, but right now it is still possible that they will be great. Why look at it any other way?

Willy Korn moved to Safety at Marshall

Has there ever been a more overrated player out of high school?
